The Ultimate All-in-One Boat Battery: Core Features

Replace separate starting and house batteries with one cranking-capable, deep-cycle Group 31 lithium battery.

Cranking power: approx. 1,000 CCA equivalent

A heavy-duty cranking BMS delivers 1,000A for up to 5 seconds, for engine cranking only, giving compatible outboard starting systems the burst current they need without using a separate lead-acid starting battery.

Deep-cycle house power with 200A continuous output

This 2.20kWh marine lithium battery also supports long-running 12V loads including fish finders, livewell pumps, bilge pumps, lighting, radios, GPS units, stereos, and other onboard electronics.

Drop the dead weight at only 40 lbs

Replace heavy lead-acid starting and house batteries with one 40-lb Group 31 lithium battery to reduce boat weight, improve service access, and free up crowded battery compartments.

Built to Survive Demanding Marine Environments

Group 31 fitment, IP65 protection, and Bluetooth visibility for boaters who need dependable power.

BCI Group 31 footprint

The compact case measures 12.91 in L × 6.22 in W × 8.46 in H (328 × 158 × 215 mm) on a BCI Group 31 footprint, for compatible marine trays, hatches, and center-console compartments. It is not a drop-in replacement for every lead-acid installation: check tray fit, terminal clearance, cable size, overcurrent protection, and the charger profile first.

IP65 dust-tight, water-jet resistant

The IP65 enclosure is dust-tight and protects the internal cells and smart BMS against low-pressure water jets from any direction in marine battery hatches and boat compartments. It is not submersible: do not submerge or pressure-wash it, or install it where standing water can collect, such as a bilge.

Bluetooth smart app monitoring

Use the Epoch Li-Ion app to check battery state of charge, voltage, current, temperature, and BMS status from your phone, so you can see how much power remains before you run back to the ramp.

Expandability & 11-Year Reliability

Build a larger 12V house bank without moving away from the cranking-capable dual-purpose platform.

Expand your 12V house bank up to 4 in parallel

Wire up to 4 matched batteries in parallel for a 12V 688Ah / 8.81kWh bank. Series wiring is not approved for this model unless Epoch provides written model-specific guidance.

4,000+ cycles and 11-year warranty

LiFePO4 chemistry provides long service life, stable voltage, fast charging capability, and maintenance-free operation backed by Epoch’s 11-year manufacturer warranty (register within 90 days of purchase).

Smart BMS protection

The built-in BMS helps protect against overcharge, over-discharge, over-current, short circuit, high temperature, low temperature, and low-temperature charging conditions.

IP65 marine protection

Dust-tight. Water-jet resistant. Not submersible.

The IP65-rated enclosure is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. It is suitable for many marine battery hatches and center-console installations, but it should not be submerged, pressure-washed, or installed where standing water can collect around the battery.

Why upgrade to Epoch dual-purpose lithium?

Start the engine, run the electronics, and remove unnecessary lead-acid weight.

This Epoch Dual Purpose LiFePO4 battery lets boaters consolidate cranking and deep-cycle power into a lighter, smarter, maintenance-free lithium platform. Compared with traditional lead-acid setups, it reduces watering, corrosion maintenance, wasted compartment space, and voltage sag under long accessory loads.

Fitment, Charging & Installation Note

Verify your exact boat, charger, alternator, and electrical system before installation.

Confirm Group 31 tray dimensions, lid clearance, hold-down method, terminal hardware, cable routing, fuse/breaker ratings, charger programming, and outboard alternator compatibility before installation. Mount the battery upright, and place a DC-rated main fuse or breaker as close as practical to the positive terminal, sized for engine cranking current as well as house loads. Use LiFePO4-compatible charging settings and follow Epoch’s current manual, applicable marine codes, and qualified installer guidance for final wiring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about cranking, house power, fitment, charging, and marine lithium safety.

Can this lithium battery really start a gas outboard motor?

Yes. Unlike standard deep-cycle lithium batteries that may shut down under engine-starting loads, the Epoch 12V 172Ah Dual Purpose battery uses a cranking-capable BMS and is rated for 1,000A for up to 5 seconds, for engine cranking only; Epoch lists it as approx. 1,000 CCA equivalent, based on that 5-second rating. Epoch’s compatibility target is outboards up to 250 hp when the engine manufacturer’s battery requirements, alternator output, wiring, and charging profile match.

Can I use this battery for both my outboard motor and my house electronics?

Yes. That is the purpose of this dual-purpose design. The battery can provide high-output cranking power for a compatible outboard while also delivering 172Ah / 2.20kWh of deep-cycle capacity for fish finders, GPS, livewell pumps, bilge pumps, lighting, stereos, radios, and other 12V marine electronics. Keep the accessory loads within the 200A continuous rating, and do not discharge the battery so deeply that there is not enough charge left to start the engine.

Will this fit in my boat's current battery tray?

The Epoch 12V 172Ah Dual Purpose battery is built on a BCI Group 31 footprint and measures 12.91 in L x 6.22 in W x 8.46 in H (328 x 158 x 215 mm). It is not a drop-in replacement for every lead-acid installation, so always verify tray size, lid clearance, cable routing, terminal access, and hold-down hardware before installation, and leave clearance above the terminals for cable bend radius and terminal covers.

Can I connect these batteries in series for a 24V or 36V trolling motor?

No. This model is not approved for series wiring. Series wiring increases voltage and may exceed the battery’s design limits, so it should not be wired in series to create 24V, 36V, or 48V systems unless Epoch provides written model-specific approval. It can be wired with up to 4 matched batteries in parallel for a larger 12V bank up to 688Ah (8.81kWh).

Can I install the battery in a bilge or an open deck compartment?

The battery has an IP65 enclosure rating: it is dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. It suits many marine battery hatches and center-console compartments, but it is not submersible: do not install it in a bilge or anywhere standing water can collect around the case or terminals, and do not submerge or pressure-wash it. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from engine and exhaust heat.

How do I check the battery level while I'm on the water?

This battery includes Bluetooth monitoring through the free Epoch Li-Ion app for iOS and Android. From your phone, you can review state of charge, voltage, current flow, temperature, and BMS status and protection events while you are at the helm or rigging area.

Can my outboard motor's alternator charge this lithium battery?

The battery can accept up to 200A of charge current, so confirm the alternator’s temperature, duty cycle, and output limits, and verify that your outboard alternator and charging system are compatible with LiFePO4 batteries. Some systems may require a lithium-ready regulator, a marine DC-to-DC charger, or manufacturer-specific guidance to protect the alternator and charge the battery correctly.

Does this battery have built-in heating?

No. This specific 12V 172Ah Dual Purpose Essential Series model does not include internal self-heating. It does include low-temperature charge protection: the battery is rated to charge from 23°F to 131°F / -5°C to 55°C, but chargers should be programmed to charge only between 32°F and 131°F / 0°C and 55°C, and the BMS blocks charging when the battery is too cold. It can still discharge down to -4°F / -20°C.
