Unlike lead-acid batteries, which should only be discharged to about 50% to avoid damage, LFP batteries can safely discharge up to 80–90% of their capacity. That means:

I have a Tiffin Phaeton that came equipped with six 6-volt lead acid batteries on a slide out tray that facilitated easier water maintenance. Charging is done with a Magna-sine 2012. Each of these batteries were 62 lbs and the tray was approximately 40 lbs. Since there were six batteries, there are several battery cables required for the installation. This results in over 400 lbs of weight in the battery compartment that is right behind the driver’s side tire.
The Phaeton is equipped with two furnaces and when a furnace is running the available voltage would drop. As a result, if the second furnace attempted to start, the sail switch wouldn’t close due to lower fan speed from lower available voltage and the furnace would shut down and fault. This issue coupled with the refrigerator draw made our annual trip to Florida in cold weather difficult.
I replaced the six battery setup with a single Epoch 460ah version 1 marine battery. Since no watering is required, the battery tray was replaced with a 3/4” sheet of plywood so the battery hold downs would have something to attach to and the battery would slide in easier. The cabling was simplified to a single red positive to the buss bar and a black negative to the Victron SmartShunt. This setup saved approximately 300 lbs.
The Magna-sine was set to a CC/CV charge cycle and a Victron DC-DC charger was added to protect the engine alternator. I also added a Cerbo-GX that allows me to monitor the battery from anywhere.
This LFP setup has solved all the issues that I had with the furnaces and overnight stays in cold weather. Not having to crawl under the slide to water the batteries alone was worth the switch from lead acid the the LFP setup. The cost of the single LFP Epoch 460ah battery was less than replacing the six 6 volt batteries would have been. We have been thrilled with the battery performance and system simplicity once it was up and running.
